Mocking Shadows CD Release

Just got this in my email one minute ago from the Mocking Shadows:
Just in case you haven't heard already...the long awaited Calgary release of our new album "The Sound" is tonight Friday Dec 14th at Wyckham House/Liberty Lounge on the Mount Royal campus. We be joined by three great local acts: Kaley Kinjo, Ryan Bourne and Five Star Affair. Doors are at 8pm, the first band goes on at 8:30 and the cover is $10. Hope to see you there!

Um, yeah... thanks for the advance warning guys. I was looking forward to this all fall and now I can't go. In future, giving your fans a little more heads up would be appreciated.

It's a pity that they don't bother to use their pre-existing methods of delivering information to let people know that they even HAVE a Facebook group. Being on their mailing list and having them as a friend on MySpace, you would think that somehow I would have been informed about the Facebook group. But that would be too easy, wouldn't it? Well, I'm finished with having to chase down the bands that I like. If they don't care about keeping their fans informed, then I don't care to be their fan.

Gareth from the Shadows here. I'm sorry you feel that way but we did send an email out to our entire nation wide email list on Aug 23rd asking everyone to check out our facebook group as we were having problems with our email service. The reason for you getting the email about our CD Release so late was that my computer was in the shop getting a new hard drive and we couldn't access our email list until that morning. We made every effort to let our "fans" know about the event by taking out a two week add and doing a large article including photos in FFWD, The Herald and The Sun. We also made appearances on Breakfast Television and CJAY 92 as well as having mentions on CBC, CJSW, CKUA, California 103, Lite 96, The Fan 960, City TV and Shaw TV for the week preceding. We also had it listed in the GIGS portion of our website along with a bulletin on the main page. There is a phenomenal amount of work that goes into running an independent band like ours and I assure you that we do "care about keeping our fans informed". I regret that you somehow managed to fall through the cracks and hope that you will reconsider your decision about supporting our band.
Thanks for your time.

PS we rarely use our myspace page anymore as we were getting virtually no response compared to the amount of work it was taking. If anyone reading this could lend us a hand by spreading the word about our myspace page it would be greatly appreciated.

I just checked the August 23rd email and yes, I see the brief mention of a Facebook group sandwiched in-between an announcement of the new album being finished with the new tracks on the MySpace page (gee, I guess it was still active then) and the Red Onion performance. Since I wasn't on Facebook at the time and your mention was so buried, there was certainly no indication that this was going to become the primary mode of communication for the band. Most people that I know who start a Facebook group email everybody on their mailing list with a link to the group inviting them to join, they don't bury it in with a bunch of other unrelated information.

As for your MySpace page no longer being active, why on earth don't you edit the About Me section of the page saying that you are now on Facebook (with a link) and won't be updating the MySpace page anymore, then send out a bulletin to inform everyone of the change. I manage three MySpace sites and it's pretty easy to let people know that you aren't using that site anymore.

As for your conventional media promotion, well that's great but that's not how everyone gets their information in this day and age. I am not alone in the fact that my primary source of news and information is the internet. I get my news headlines delivered to me via email from a variety of news sources, so I neiter watch the news (aside from Jon Stewart) nor read hard copies of the newspapers. I sign up for mailing lists for artists that I want to see, so that I don't have to be constantly checking their website or looking through music listings on the off chance that they might be playing anywhere near me.

While I appreciate that you took the time to comment on my blog, I have to admit that I'm fed up with having to constantly be tracking you guys down. Is there really a point to joining the Facebook group? Are you guys actually keeping it up to date? Because your website is often hit or miss as to when you last updated it. Why should I expect Facebook to be any different?

I'm not saying I won't consider it, but I'm just really frustrated here.

I apologize if my tone sounds snarky in the above comment. I'm on day 4 of a migraine here... so patience, tact, etc. are pretty much out the window.
